The summer of 2017 was a banner alpine bloom year for me. For the first trip, three of us headed to Manning Park and hiked up the Heather Trail.

Day One: Drive to Anacortes, WA. Park car at ferry terminal. Take ferry to Lopez Island. Cycle to Odin County Park. Set up camp.
Day Two: Cycle to Lopez Village for the Farmers Market. Resume cycling south to Richardson Wharf, Iceberg Point, then back to campsite. Supper in Lopez Village.
Day Three: Get on ferry to Friday Harbour. Cycle west to San Juan County Park. Set up camp. Cycle north to Roche Harbour for supper. Return to camp.
Day Four: Cycle to south-east to San Juan Island National Historical Park, then north to Friday Harbour. Board ferry to Anacortes.

2011 made for a crappy year in BCs lower mainland. Six weeks of ‘summer’ (per my definition of the term) simply did not cut it. Previously, I had no desire to travel to warmer climes. That was about to change. Flights, a cabin and scooter were booked.
On a Tuesday in December within a couple hours of landing in Lihue, I was wandering barefoot in the sun and sand of a Kaua’i beach.
Trip number one of many to Hawai’i.
This was my first bike trip to the Southern Gulf Islands.
